Open Heritage developed the successful HLF stage 1 application bid for the Red Rose Chain in Ipswich. This first-round pass award includes development funding to support Red Rose Chain’s plans to build a new rear annexe onto the Grade II* listed property, one of Ipswich’s oldest buildings. The new build will complement the original hall; the proposed form is that of a barn, to present a familiar and sympathetic backdrop to the hall. This will house a studio-theatre, which will provide a valuable resource for the people of Ipswich and those in the surrounding region.
We provided research into the building’s history and physical fabric alongside in-depth research into the region’s demographic and other cultural facilities. Open Heritage identified potential users and community groups that would use Gippeswyk Hall and consulted with them to capture their needs and ideas to include within the application. We liaised between the Red Rose Chain, local authority, English Heritage and other consultants to develop the successful application.
